Module 5 Prompts

1) The Terms of the Debate: Institutional Racism and the “white frame”

  • How is institutionalized racism manifesting in this story? How does it get challenged? How does the challenge get challenged?

  • What do you make of the anti-climactic ending?

  • Are there ways in which this case study is relevant to your sangha and/or to the Buddhist organizations, communities and contexts you are part of?

2) Institutional and Systemic Racism

  • What are some of the ways in which you and your family might have benefitted from institutional and structural racism? Try to be specific.

  • Have there been times when you have noticed institutionalized and/or structural racism? Try to be specific.

  • Have you experienced creative responses to institutional or systemic racism? How can systems and institutions become part of the solution?

3) Resourcing in the Dharma

  • How might we articulate  (or draw/dance/sculpt) the Four Noble Truths of systemic racism? (this is a creative exercise – no right or wrong answers here!)

  • What is at the hub if wheel of systemic racism? Does it have a hub or hubs? 

  • How do I get off the wheel? Can I? Can we?

  • What do you make of Sangharakshita’s reflections on changing the system and/or changing the individual?
