Reading Circles 2022

The Reading Circles are open to experienced members of the Triratna Buddhist Community (order members, mitras and friends) of all races and ethnicities. Each session will be held mostly in the format of racial affinity groups. These are intentional small groups for BIPOC/BAME and white/white-presenting people.

Would you like to read a transformational book written by a Buddhist author about race over the summer? Would you consider doing this as a community, within a supportive online ‘Reading Circle’ with other Triratna sangha members?

We are offering opportunities to explore two wonderful works in a spacious format over these summer months: The Race Conversation by Eugene Ellis, and Black Buddhists and the Black Radical Tradition by Dr. Rima Vesely-Flad.

Both authors have generously offered to meet with our Reading Circles for Q&A at the end of each cycle!

The Reading Circles will be held over Zoom for 90 minutes, during times that will allow for international engagement from our community.

Most of our time will be spent in racial affinity groups (ie intentional groups of white/white-presenting people and people of color devoted to exploring their racial conditioning). There will be an opportunity to come together at key moments, such as during our sessions with the authors. For more information about the practice of racial affinity groups, the format, and other questions, please see our FAQ below.

We also welcome members from our communities in India and Australia to form circles running concurrently, and we would work with you to find a more suitable time of day to help make that happen. Please reach out if you would like to discuss this with us.

The Race Conversation by Eugene Ellis is a deeply compassionate book that illuminates why having conversations about race can be difficult - anywhere from unsettling to traumatic. He quotes Jay Smooth (the New York hip-hop radio show host) who describes race as ‘a dance partner that is designed to trip us up’.  The book draws on Eugene Ellis’ wisdom as both a therapist and a dharma practitioner, to offer practical insights into how we can have more healing and transformative encounters with each other on the issue of race. It was written with readers of all races in mind. Subhuti describes the book as ‘a ground-breaking and timely study’. Paramabandhu recently interviewed Eugene at the London Buddhist Centre.

In the last week, Eugene Ellis will join us for Q&A.

We will be reading about one chapter a week, and sharing our reflections and responses to the book, supported by meditation and contemplative communal reading. You can consult the full reading schedule (subject to change).

We invite you to purchase the book at a discount, directly from the publisher.

FAQs

These are frequently asked questions (FAQs) specifically related to the Summer Reading Circles.

You will find a more general set of questions about the (white) Awareness is Revolutionary initiative in our general FAQ section.

  • The Reading Circles are open to experienced members of the Triratna Buddhist Community (order members, mitras and friends) of all races and ethnicities. Each session will be held mostly in the format of racial affinity groups. These are intentional small groups for BIPOC/BAME and white/white-presenting people.

  • Each session lasts 90 minutes over Zoom, and will be dedicated to a section of the book, typically one chapter. So a very readable amount, week to week.

We will first all gather as a larger circle, have a short opening and meditation, review some guidance, and then go off in our respective racial affinity groups.

We are aiming to have two designated facilitators for each small group.

At the end of the session, we come back all together as a larger circle for a short dedication of merit.

At the end of the cycle we will have a special session with the author of the book, with a format that will be announced.

  • When exploring our racial conditioning, it can be very helpful to meet separately in different groups.

We have our experience within Triratna of “single sex” activities to draw on which helps us know the value of this kind of approach.

In each grouping, there can be a supportive space to explore how race is experienced and the different issues it brings up.

Experience shows communication in multiracial contexts and relationships can be greatly improved through this practice.

For more about racial affinity groups in Buddhists contexts and beyond, please see our general FAQ.

  • We don’t really know at this stage, as this depends on how many people register, but we will have several facilitators to help hold space in smaller groups. Ideally, small groups with be 6-7 people, each with two facilitators. These groups will stay the same through the arc of the journey, so that participants can build a depth of connection and trust.

  • It’s important to have a reasonable degree of consistency so that the connections between us can deepen and trust can build. In terms of what you already know about your availability, we’d like you to be able to commit to at least 6 of the 8 sessions, for each circle.

Each circle is run independently. You can sign up to one, or both.

We fully acknowledge that it’s hard to know if you want to participate or keep participating in something until you experience it and feel it out. We respect that after giving it a go, you might decide this is not for you, and it is totally ok to drop out. No judgement!

  • This offering is freely available. There is no fee.

However, you will need to purchase the book(s). Please do use the discount codes provided! In support of the authors and copyright laws, we will not be providing full scans.

There will be an opportunity to offer dana to Eugene Ellis and Rima Vesely-Flad who generously accepted our invitation to come and engage with the groups without asking for a speaker fee.

  • This initiative is a collaboration of the (white) Awareness is Revolutionary Collective and members of the BIPOC/BAME community of Triratna.

Black Buddhists and the Black Radical Tradition by Dr. Rima Vesely-Flad draws on interviews and field work with 40 Black Buddhist teachers and practitioners, a majority of whom identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer, inviting them to tell their own stories of Dharma practice and liberation. The book offers a nuanced discussion of how the Black body, which has historically been reviled, is re-claimed as a vehicle for liberation. Dr. Vesely-Flad shows the importance of these teachers' insights into Buddhist wisdom, and how they align Buddhism with the Black Radical Tradition, helping to extricate Buddhism from dominant white cultural norms. While some readers may deepen their understanding of Buddhism through Dr. Vesely-Flad’s narration of the Black experience, others will be learning about the Black Radical Tradition and what Buddhism might contribute to it. Either way, her analysis of the unique fusion of this encounter offers precious insights to anyone committed to liberation and the flourishing of multi-racial sanghas. Those seeking to understand contemporary forms of Buddhism, the process of enculturation of the tradition outside of Asia, and the development of cultural competency and racial literacy in Dharma teaching will find this book to be invaluable.

In the last week, Rima Vesely-Flad will join us for Q&A.

We will be reading about one chapter a week and sharing our reflections and responses to the book, supported by meditation and contemplative communal reading. You can consult the full reading schedule (subject to change).
